Former Minister for Local Government and Rural Development, Dr. Akwasi Opong-Fosu, has officially launched his campaign to become National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
His campaign, built around the theme “Restoration, Renewal and Resetting,” focuses on strengthening the party’s grassroots structures, promoting organizational discipline and introducing reforms to improve its internal operations.
Dr. Opong-Fosu said his leadership would seek to reconnect the NDC with its founding principles of social justice, probity and accountability. He stressed the need for the party to restore confidence among its members while creating a stronger and more inclusive political organization.
A major part of his campaign is the empowerment of grassroots members. He believes closer engagement between the party’s national leadership and its supporters at the branch, constituency and regional levels will be essential to sustaining unity and preparing the NDC for future political contests.
The former minister has also called for greater discipline within the party’s structures, arguing that clearly defined responsibilities and effective communication would improve coordination across all levels of the NDC.
He further wants the party to move away from excessive dependence on individual personalities and instead establish durable institutions capable of functioning effectively beyond particular leaders or electoral cycles.
Dr. Opong-Fosu brings decades of political and public-service experience to the chairmanship race. He previously served as the Member of Parliament for Amenfi East, a district chief executive and Minister for Local Government and Rural Development.
His entry adds another prominent figure to the contest as the NDC prepares for its forthcoming leadership congress, where delegates will elect national officers to manage the party’s affairs.
