Jerry Ahmed Shaib Demands JoyNews Apology to Afenyo-Markin Over Caucus Report

Afenyo-Markin

The Member of Parliament for Weija-Gbawe and Deputy Minority Chief Whip, Jerry Ahmed Shaib, has called on JoyNews to issue an unreserved apology to Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin over a report concerning the New Patriotic Party Parliamentary Caucus.

Shaib described the publication as inaccurate and misleading, arguing that withdrawing it without publicly acknowledging the alleged error would not constitute sufficient accountability.

He made the demand while speaking on the Asaase Breakfast Show, where he also raised broader concerns about verification, fairness and public confidence in the media.

The Report Claimed Afenyo-Markin Had Been Summoned

The disputed JoyNews report suggested that Afenyo-Markin was expected to appear before members of the NPP Parliamentary Caucus to respond to extortion allegations reportedly made against him by Ghana Gold Board Chief Executive Officer Sammy Gyamfi.

The report created the impression that members of the caucus had summoned the Minority Leader to answer questions about the allegations.

Afenyo-Markin subsequently rejected that account, maintaining that he had not been called before the caucus for questioning.

The extortion claims remain allegations and should not be treated as established facts without evidence or a competent legal finding.

Afenyo-Markin Says He Convened Meeting

According to the Minority Leader, he personally called the caucus meeting as part of the NPP parliamentary group’s routine preparations ahead of the resumption of parliamentary sittings.

He explained that such meetings allow members to discuss their legislative agenda, coordinate their positions and prepare for upcoming business in the House.

Afenyo-Markin therefore disputed any suggestion that the gathering had been organized by his colleagues to compel him to respond to allegations.

The distinction between convening a routine meeting and being summoned before colleagues is central to Shaib’s criticism of the report.

Pulling Down Story Is Not Enough – Shaib

Shaib said removing the story from JoyNews platforms would not adequately correct the public impression created by its original publication.

He argued that a media organization that publishes inaccurate information has a professional responsibility to issue a clear retraction and apology with prominence comparable to the initial report.

According to him, readers or viewers who encountered the original story might never become aware that it had been withdrawn unless the correction was actively publicized.

The Weija-Gbawe MP consequently demanded an explicit acknowledgement from JoyNews that its characterization of the caucus meeting was erroneous.

MP Raises Concerns About Media Accountability

Shaib also used the controversy to question how media organizations handle verification and corrections.

He warned that unverified reports could damage reputations and undermine public confidence in journalism, particularly when stories involve political leaders and serious allegations.

The Deputy Minority Chief Whip maintained that journalists must verify information with the affected parties and clearly distinguish confirmed facts from allegations, interpretations or speculation.

He further cautioned that perceptions of political bias could grow when media organizations appear unwilling to correct disputed reports transparently.

Calls for Transparent Correction

The controversy has renewed debate about the standards media organizations should follow when correcting published material.

Professional corrections generally require more than silently deleting or editing a story. They should clearly identify the inaccurate information, provide the corrected account and explain the change to audiences.

Shaib insisted that an open apology would help repair any reputational harm suffered by Afenyo-Markin and demonstrate JoyNews’ commitment to fairness and accountability.

JoyNews’ response to the demand will determine whether the dispute ends with the removal of the report or develops into a broader confrontation over media ethics and political coverage.
