The Volta Regional branch of the New Patriotic Party has called on President John Dramani Mahama to dismiss the Acting Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Gold Board, Sammy Gyamfi, or publicly reprimand him over comments directed at Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin.
Addressing a press conference in Ho, the party’s Volta Regional Chairman, Makafui Kofi Woanya, accused Gyamfi of using an official platform to attack the Minority Leader instead of responding to concerns about an alleged $1.7 billion operational loss involving GoldBod.
Woanya argued that public officials should not use state-backed communication platforms to demean lawmakers or citizens seeking accountability over the management of public resources.
According to the regional NPP, Gyamfi’s remarks violated the government’s Code of Conduct for political appointees. The party maintained that failure to impose sanctions would weaken public confidence in the administration’s commitment to ethical leadership.
The group consequently urged President Mahama to act decisively and demonstrate that political appointees were not beyond public scrutiny.
The demand, however, drew a response from the National Democratic Congress’ communication team in the Volta Region.
Regional NDC communicator Japhet Festus Gbede rejected the NPP’s position, describing it as hypocritical. He argued that the party’s regional leadership lacked the moral authority to demand sanctions while facing unresolved internal disagreements and disputes over its regional executive elections.
NDC representatives also defended Gyamfi’s stewardship of GoldBod, insisting that his references to previous financial challenges involving state-owned institutions formed part of a legitimate public policy debate.
They cited historical balance-sheet deficits associated with institutions such as the Electricity Company of Ghana and Ghana Water Limited, arguing that raising questions about their past performance should not automatically be characterized as a personal attack.
The disagreement has intensified the political debate surrounding GoldBod’s operations and the responsibility of public officials to respond to allegations involving state resources.
Neither the presidency nor GoldBod has been reported as announcing disciplinary action against Gyamfi following the Volta NPP’s demand.
