Ghanaian winger Antoine Semenyo delivered two outstanding assists as Manchester City came from behind to defeat Atlético Madrid 3-1 in a pre-season friendly on Sunday, August 9, 2026.
The match, played before more than 50,000 spectators at the Seoul World Cup Stadium in South Korea, brought City’s 2026 pre-season tour of Asia to a successful conclusion.
Manchester City controlled much of the possession during the opening stages but struggled to convert their dominance into clear goalscoring opportunities.
Atlético Madrid punished City shortly before halftime when highly rated 16-year-old Jorge Domínguez opened the scoring in the 43rd minute. The youngster reacted quickly inside the penalty area and poked the ball home to give the Spanish side a 1-0 lead at the break.
City responded strongly after the restart, with Semenyo taking control of the game from the wing.
In the 57th minute, the Ghana international produced a determined sliding effort to prevent the ball from going out of play. He then beat his marker before delivering an accurate cross for Omar Marmoush to score the equaliser.
Semenyo created another goal just two minutes later. After receiving a pass from Joško Gvardiol, he accelerated down the flank and sent a low delivery across the six-yard box, allowing Marmoush to tap home his second goal of the match.
The two goals within two minutes completely changed the contest and handed Manchester City a 2-1 advantage.
Atlético attempted to find a way back into the game, but City’s defence protected the lead before substitute Rayan Aït-Nouri secured the victory in stoppage time. Aït-Nouri converted a pass from Divin Mubama to complete the 3-1 comeback.
Semenyo’s performance capped an impressive pre-season campaign in which he registered four assists across three matches. His creativity, pace and ability to deliver from wide positions have strengthened his place in manager Enzo Maresca’s attacking plans ahead of the new season.
Manchester City will now return to the United Kingdom to prepare for their FA Community Shield meeting with Arsenal on August 16.
