Antoine Semenyo is set to spearhead Ghana’s attack at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, following a breakthrough season that saw the forward shine across spells with AFC Bournemouth and Manchester City.

The decision comes amid a major setback for the Black Stars, with talisman Mohammed Kudus ruled out of the tournament due to injury. Former Ghana captain Asamoah Gyan has since noted that the responsibility of leading the team’s attacking line now firmly rests on the shoulders of the 26-year-old Semenyo.

Semenyo’s rise to prominence during the 2025–26 season has been one of the defining stories of Ghanaian football, culminating in a reported £62.5 million move to Manchester City during the January transfer window.

His campaign was split between two standout performances at club level.

Under manager Andoni Iraola, Semenyo began the season in impressive form for Bournemouth, registering 10 goals and 3 assists in 20 Premier League appearances.

He ended his spell at the Vitality Stadium in dramatic fashion, scoring a stoppage-time winner against Tottenham Hotspur that further elevated his reputation as one of the league’s most decisive forwards.

Following his high-profile transfer to Manchester City, Semenyo quickly adapted to Pep Guardiola’s system, adding depth and versatility to the club’s attacking options.

He marked his debut with a goal against Exeter City and went on to score 7 Premier League goals in 17 appearances. One of his standout moments came in the FA Cup final, where he found the net in a crucial victory over Chelsea.

Ghana has established its pre-World Cup training camp in Newport, Wales—a location that holds personal significance for Semenyo, who previously played in the region on loan early in his career.

Now, the forward returns as one of the team’s most experienced and high-profile players, tasked with leading the Black Stars on football’s biggest stage.

Head coach Carlos Queiroz is expected to build Ghana’s attacking system around Semenyo’s physicality, direct running, and technical versatility.

The forward’s ability to operate both centrally and on the wing offers Ghana multiple tactical options, allowing for fluid attacking transitions and adaptable formations during matches.

Ghana has been drawn into a challenging Group L alongside England, Croatia, and Panama, setting the stage for a highly competitive group-stage campaign in North America.

Semenyo, who featured briefly at the 2022 World Cup with a 19-minute appearance, will be aiming to score his first goal on football’s biggest international stage.

Semenyo recently featured in Ghana’s final warm-up match, a 1–1 draw against Wales, as the team continues to fine-tune its tactics ahead of the tournament.

With preparations nearing completion, expectations are high that Semenyo will play a central role in Ghana’s quest for success at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
