Players of Ghana’s senior women’s national football team have publicly demanded the payment of outstanding bonuses and per diems ahead of their crucial 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup playoff against Côte d’Ivoire.
The Black Queens are scheduled to face their West African rivals on Thursday in a must-win encounter that will determine whether Ghana’s hopes of qualifying for the tournament in Brazil remain alive.
The financial dispute follows the team’s campaign at the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco. Players have expressed frustration over match bonuses and daily allowances they say remain unpaid by the government and the Ministry of Youth and Sports.
Beyond the outstanding payments, members of the squad have reportedly raised concerns about their general welfare and the level of administrative support they received during the continental tournament.
The players believe the conditions provided in Morocco did not meet the professional standards expected at a major international competition. Their concerns have intensified scrutiny of how Ghana’s women’s national teams are supported compared with their male counterparts.
The dispute comes at a particularly sensitive moment for the Black Queens, who were eliminated from WAFCON at the quarter-final stage after suffering a 2-1 defeat to tournament debutants Malawi.
That loss ended Ghana’s opportunity to secure automatic qualification for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup through the continental championship. The team must now progress through the playoff route to reach the global tournament.
Côte d’Ivoire therefore represents a major obstacle in Ghana’s qualification campaign. Defeat would bring the Black Queens’ World Cup ambitions to an end, while victory would keep them in contention for a place in Brazil.
The unresolved payments risk disrupting preparations and affecting morale as the players attempt to recover from their WAFCON disappointment.
The Black Queens are calling on the government and sports authorities to settle the outstanding amounts immediately and provide the necessary support before Thursday’s decisive playoff.
