Ecuador Stun Germany 2-1 at MetLife Stadium to Reach 2026 World Cup Knockout Stage

Germany

Ecuador produced one of the standout performances of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, coming from behind to defeat Germany 2-1 in a thrilling Group E encounter at a sold-out MetLife Stadium, sealing a historic place in the Round of 32.

Despite the shock defeat, Germany still finished top of Group E on goal difference, while Ecuador progressed as one of the tournament’s highest-ranked third-placed teams.

The match also contributed to a historic milestone, as FIFA confirmed a record combined attendance of 3.6 million fans across the first 56 matches of the tournament.

Fast Start and Early Controversy

Germany struck almost immediately in the 2nd minute amid early controversy. Ecuador protested strongly after claims of a missed high boot by Aleksandar Pavlović on Pedro Vite in the build-up, but play continued.

Leroy Sané capitalized on the moment, finishing a rapid move with a side-footed strike past goalkeeper Hernán Galíndez. The goal went down as one of the fastest in German World Cup history and gave the European side an early 1-0 lead.

Ecuador Respond with a Stunning Equalizer

La Tricolor answered just minutes later with intensity and precision. In the 9th minute, Nilson Angulo pounced on a loose ball following work from Pedro Vite, finding space outside the box before unleashing a powerful low strike that flew through traffic and beyond Manuel Neuer.

The equalizer shifted momentum firmly in Ecuador’s favor as the South Americans grew into the contest.

VAR Drama Denies Germany

Germany believed they had earned a penalty shortly after the restart when referee Tori Penso initially pointed to the spot in the 47th minute.

However, following a VAR review, the decision was overturned after officials ruled that Leroy Sané had committed a foul on Pedro Vite earlier in the attacking phase, leaving the match level and tensions rising.

Plata Delivers the Decisive Moment

The breakthrough arrived in the 77th minute after sustained Ecuadorian pressure. A dangerous corner delivery created chaos inside the German box, where substitute Kevin Rodríguez rose to flick the ball across the near post.

Gonzalo Plata reacted quickest, sliding in to instinctively turn the ball into the roof of the net and send the Ecuadorian supporters into celebration.

Historic Win Secures Knockout Spot

Ecuador held firm through the closing stages to secure a famous 2-1 victory, confirming their progression to the Round of 32 in dramatic fashion.

While Germany exited the match disappointed, their earlier group-stage form ensured they still topped Group E on goal difference and advanced comfortably to the knockout phase.

For Ecuador, the result marks a landmark achievement on the world stage, capped by one of the most memorable upsets of the tournament so far.
