Egypt Hold Iran to 1-1 Draw to Reach 2026 FIFA World Cup Knockout Stage

Egypt

Egypt secured their place in the knockout rounds of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after battling to a 1-1 draw against Iran in their final Group G match at Seattle Stadium.

The result was enough to see the Pharaohs finish as runners-up in the group and advance to the Round of 32, while Iran was left heartbroken after a dramatic stoppage-time winner was ruled out following a VAR review.

Egypt Make Fast Start

The Pharaohs wasted little time taking control of the contest, opening the scoring in just the fifth minute.

Midfielder Mahmoud Saber reacted quickest after Iranian goalkeeper Alireza Beiranvand parried an initial effort, firing a left-footed finish into the net to hand Egypt an early advantage.

Shobeir Saves Penalty Before Iran Respond

Iran had a golden opportunity to level the match in the 10th minute when they were awarded a penalty.

However, Egyptian goalkeeper Mostafa Shobeir produced a superb diving save to deny striker Mehdi Taremi from the spot, preserving his side’s lead.

The relief proved short-lived. Four minutes later, Ramin Rezaeian capitalized on a loose ball inside the penalty area and squeezed his effort home from a tight angle to bring Iran level at 1-1.

Salah Substituted With Apparent Injury

Egypt suffered an injury scare in the second half when captain Mohamed Salah was substituted in the 57th minute.

The Liverpool forward was later seen on the bench applying ice to his hamstring, raising concerns over his fitness ahead of Egypt’s upcoming knockout-stage fixture.

Neither the Egyptian Football Association nor the team’s medical staff immediately disclosed the extent of the injury.

VAR Denies Iran Dramatic Winner

The match produced a dramatic conclusion deep into stoppage time.

In the 93rd minute, defender Shojae Khalilzadeh appeared to have scored a decisive winner that would have dramatically changed the group’s final standings.

However, following a lengthy Video Assistant Referee (VAR) review, the goal was disallowed for offside, sparking disappointment among the Iranian players and supporters.

The decision ensured the match ended 1-1 and confirmed Egypt’s progression to the knockout stage.

Match Also Draws Off-Field Attention

The fixture attracted attention beyond the action on the pitch after local organizers in Seattle promoted the game as a “Pride Match” during Pride Month celebrations.

The branding reportedly prompted formal complaints from both the Egyptian and Iranian football federations, adding an off-field dimension to an already high-profile encounter.

Egypt March On

With the draw, Egypt advances to the Round of 32 as Group G runners-up after a resilient group-stage campaign.

Although concerns remain over Mohamed Salah’s fitness, the Pharaohs will now turn their attention to the knockout rounds, hoping to continue their journey in the tournament.

For Iran, the late VAR decision brought a heartbreaking end to their campaign, denying them what appeared to be a dramatic victory and automatic qualification to the next stage.
