Mbappé’s match-winning penalty further cemented his place among the greatest goal scorers in FIFA World Cup history.
The goal was his 19th career World Cup strike, leaving him just one goal behind Lionel Messi on the competition’s all-time scoring chart.
It also marked his 11th goal in the knockout stages of the tournament, extending his own record as the highest-scoring player in World Cup knockout history.
France to Face Morocco in the Quarterfinals
With the victory, France advances to the quarterfinals, where they will meet Morocco in one of the tournament’s marquee matchups.
The last-eight clash is scheduled for Thursday, July 9, at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts, with a place in the FIFA World Cup semifinals on the line.
