Ghana Announces $10,000 Gold Medal Bonus for 2026 Commonwealth Games Athletes

The announcement was made by the Minister for Youth and Sports, Kofi Adams, on July 23, 2026, during an event that also saw the government honor a long-overdue financial commitment to veteran boxer Abdul Wahid Omar.

Abdul Wahid Omar Receives Long-Overdue Bonus

At the ceremony, Abdul Wahid Omar was presented with a $3,000 cash reward for winning a bronze medal at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, bringing an end to a 12-year delay in the payment of athletes’ bonuses.

Before the 2014 Games, the Sports Ministry had promised medal bonuses of $7,000 for gold, $5,000 for silver, and $3,000 for bronze. Although Omar secured bronze in the light-welterweight division, he never received the promised reward until now.

The payment follows years of calls for the government to fulfil its commitment, with sustained media advocacy helping to keep the issue in the public spotlight.

The settlement comes at a significant moment for Omar, who is representing Ghana at the Commonwealth Games for a historic fourth time.

New Incentive Package for Team Ghana

To encourage strong performances at the 2026 Games, the government has introduced an enhanced incentive package, with a $10,000 reward for every Ghanaian athlete who wins a gold medal.

While the Ministry did not announce the exact bonus amounts for silver and bronze medalists, officials indicated that rewards for those categories would be scaled accordingly.

The Sports Ministry says the incentive package reflects the government’s commitment to rewarding excellence and inspiring athletes to achieve greater success on the international stage.

Ghana Targets More Commonwealth Games Success

The 2026 Commonwealth Games, taking place in Glasgow from July 23 to August 2, present another opportunity for Ghana to build on its proud record at the competition.

Ghana has won 63 medals in the history of the Commonwealth Games and will be aiming to increase that tally across multiple disciplines.

Abdul Wahid Omar is expected to lead Ghana’s boxing campaign in the 65kg division, while the country’s athletics team will be spearheaded by leading sprinters Benjamin Azamati and Joseph Paul Amoah as they seek podium finishes for Team Ghana.

The government hopes the improved incentive package, coupled with the resolution of past financial commitments, will boost morale and inspire Ghanaian athletes to deliver outstanding performances throughout the Games.
