Ghana Government Releases GH¢76.47 Million to Support Black Stars’ 2026 FIFA World Cup Campaign

Govt release funds

The Government of Ghana, through the Ministry of Finance, has approved the release of GH¢76,466,919.20 to finance the Black Stars’ participation in the 2026 FIFA World Cup, providing a significant boost as the national team embarks on its group-stage campaign across the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

According to an official statement issued by Presidential Spokesman Felix Kwakye Ofosu, the funds are intended to ensure the team has the financial resources required for smooth preparations and operations while also settling outstanding obligations to players and technical staff.

Funding Allocated to Preparations and Logistics

The largest portion of the package, GH¢58,929,500.00, represents the cedi equivalent of US$5 million and has been released in advance to support the Black Stars’ World Cup preparations.

The allocation is expected to cover critical expenses including travel logistics, accommodation, operational costs, and training camp activities during the opening stages of the tournament, enabling the team to focus fully on its on-field performance.

Qualification Bonuses Fully Settled

An additional GH¢17,537,419.20, equivalent to US$1.488 million, has been earmarked to clear the remaining 50 percent of qualification-related payments owed to players and members of the technical team.

The payment fulfills commitments made under a performance-based compensation agreement and ensures that all outstanding qualification bonuses have been settled before Ghana begins its World Cup campaign.

Part of a Broader National Sports Budget

The latest disbursement represents the first phase of a wider GH¢150 million budget approved by Parliament to support Ghana’s participation in the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Government officials have indicated that the expenditure is being treated as a pre-financing arrangement, with expectations that much of the funding will be recovered through FIFA’s tournament distributions.

FIFA Prize Money Expected to Offset Costs

Every nation participating in the 2026 FIFA World Cup is guaranteed a minimum financial package from FIFA, including US$1.5 million designated for tournament preparations and US$9 million for participation in the group stage.

As a result, the Ghanaian government anticipates that the advance funding provided from public resources will be substantially offset once FIFA releases its official prize money payments to participating federations.

Focus Turns to Tournament Performance

With financial arrangements now largely in place, attention shifts to the Black Stars’ performance on the pitch as Ghana seeks to make a strong impression at the expanded 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The timely release of funds is expected to provide stability for the team and create an environment in which players and coaches can concentrate fully on their quest for success on football’s biggest stage.
