Jordan Ayew Close to Sheffield United Move After Leicester City Exit

Jordan

Ghana captain Jordan Ayew is reportedly nearing a return to the EFL Championship as negotiations over a possible move to Sheffield United gather pace.

The 34-year-old forward is available on a free transfer following the expiration of his contract with Leicester City.

Several Championship clubs, including Blackburn Rovers and Burnley, reportedly contacted Ayew’s representatives to explore a possible deal. Sheffield United, however, have emerged as the leading contender for his signature, with discussions said to be progressing rapidly.

Ayew also attracted interest from clubs outside England, including Cypriot side APOEL Nicosia. The experienced attacker is understood to prefer remaining in the English football system, where he has spent more than a decade of his career.

His experience in both the Premier League and Championship could make him a valuable addition to Sheffield United’s attacking options. Ayew can operate as a central striker, supporting forward or winger, offering tactical flexibility across the frontline.

The Ghanaian previously played for Aston Villa, Swansea City and Crystal Palace before joining Leicester City in 2024. He made more than 200 appearances for Palace and was named the club’s Player of the Season for the 2019/20 campaign.

At Leicester, Ayew served mainly as a rotational forward while contributing his experience to the club’s attacking unit.

Internationally, he has earned more than 120 senior appearances for Ghana since making his debut in 2010. He currently serves as captain of the Black Stars and remains one of the most experienced members of the national team.

If an agreement is completed, Sheffield United will add a proven and versatile attacker with extensive experience in English football as the club strengthens its squad for its Championship campaign.
