Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania are working on a joint visa arrangement to make travel between the three countries easier for supporters attending the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations.
The proposed permit, provisionally known as the “Pamoja Visa,” would allow eligible visitors, participating teams and officials to enter all three host nations without obtaining separate visas. The initiative is intended to simplify travel between match venues and encourage visitors to explore the region.
A four-month validity period has been proposed, allowing travel before, during and after the competition. Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni endorsed the idea during a meeting with tournament organizers in July and called for discussions with Kenya and Tanzania to advance the arrangement.
The tournament is scheduled for June 19 to July 17, 2027, with the three countries hosting under the Pamoja banner.
The visa proposal builds on the existing East Africa Tourist Visa framework involving Kenya, Uganda and Rwanda. Tanzania is not part of that arrangement, making its inclusion central to the planned AFCON travel scheme.
Beyond facilitating attendance at matches, authorities hope easier movement will encourage longer stays and spending across the region’s tourism sector, benefiting accommodation providers, transport businesses and tour operators.
Implementation will require the host countries to coordinate entry procedures and prepare border posts to apply the agreed rules consistently. The scheme remains a proposal, with its introduction dependent on agreement among the participating governments.
