Liam Delap Scores Twice as Chelsea Fight Back to Draw 3-3 With JDT

Liam Delap

Liam Delap scored two penalties as Chelsea battled to a dramatic 3-3 draw against Malaysian champions Johor Darul Ta’zim on Sunday, August 9, 2026.

The entertaining encounter concluded Chelsea’s summer pre-season tour of Australia and Asia, with the Blues twice recovering from difficult positions to avoid defeat.

Johor Darul Ta’zim made the stronger start and opened the scoring through Arif Aiman in the 14th minute. Chelsea struggled to find an immediate response but eventually drew level shortly before halftime.

Delap won a penalty after being fouled inside the box and confidently converted the resulting spot kick. The goal ended a seven-month scoring drought for the 23-year-old, whose previous strike came against Fulham in early January.

Chelsea improved after the break and moved ahead when Jamie Gittens was brought down in the penalty area. Delap again took responsibility and scored his second penalty to give Xabi Alonso’s side a 2-1 lead.

The brace doubled Delap’s total from the previous season, when he managed two goals in 41 appearances.

Chelsea’s advantage did not last long, however, as JDT responded through Oscar Arribas. His free kick took a deflection before finding the net to make the score 2-2.

The Malaysian champions appeared to have secured a memorable victory when Bergson scored in the 86th minute, restoring their lead with only a few minutes remaining.

Chelsea refused to surrender and equalized in the 89th minute. Mykhailo Mudryk delivered a dangerous cross into the penalty area, forcing Cristian Glauder to divert the ball into his own net.

The late own goal rescued a 3-3 draw for the Blues and brought a dramatic end to their overseas tour.

Xabi Alonso selected a completely different starting lineup from the team that defeated AC Milan 3-0 in Jakarta, giving more members of his squad an opportunity to build their fitness ahead of the new campaign.

Chelsea will now return to London before hosting Real Sociedad at Stamford Bridge on Saturday, August 15, in their final pre-season friendly.
