South Africa Rescue Vital Draw Against Czechia to Keep World Cup Dream Alive

South Africa produced a spirited comeback to secure a dramatic 1-1 draw against Czechia in their second Group A match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with Teboho Mokoena’s late penalty ensuring both sides remain in contention for a place in the knockout stages.

The result leaves South Africa and Czechia on one point apiece after two matches, setting up decisive final-day fixtures as they fight to stay alive in the tournament.

Czechia Strike Early

Facing intense pressure after disappointing opening defeats, both managers made sweeping tactical changes in search of a positive result. South Africa coach Hugo Broos abandoned his side’s cautious approach, while Czech manager Miroslav Koubek introduced five new starters.

The changes paid immediate dividends for the Europeans.

In the sixth minute, Adam Hložek exploited a lapse in the South African defense after a long throw-in and drove to the byline before cutting the ball back into the penalty area. Alexandr Sojka cleverly redirected it with a first-time pass to Michal Sadílek, who fired an unstoppable shot beyond goalkeeper Ronwen Williams to give Czechia an early 1-0 lead.

Bafana Bafana Respond

After taking the lead, Czechia adopted a more defensive approach, allowing South Africa to dominate possession for much of the contest. Despite controlling the ball, Bafana Bafana struggled to create clear-cut opportunities until halftime substitute Relebohile Mofokeng injected fresh energy into the attack.

Their persistence was finally rewarded seven minutes from time.

Thapelo Maseko cut inside the penalty area and unleashed a powerful effort that struck the arm of Czech substitute Pavel Šulc. The referee immediately awarded a penalty after ruling the contact to be handball.

Mokoena stepped up under immense pressure and calmly sent goalkeeper Matěj Kovář the wrong way, burying his spot kick into the corner to level the score at 1-1 and spark celebrations among the South African supporters.

Costly Booking for Mokoena

While Mokoena’s equalizer rescued a valuable point, the midfielder’s evening ended with disappointing news. A yellow card received during the match was his second of the tournament, triggering a suspension that will rule him out of South Africa’s crucial final group-stage fixture.

The match also featured an unusual moment off the field, as fans initially voiced their frustration during mandatory hydration breaks before the mood shifted dramatically when the stadium joined in a spontaneous sing-along to “Take Me Home, Country Roads.”

Group A Race Goes Down to the Wire

With both South Africa and Czechia sitting on one point, qualification for the knockout rounds remains possible but will likely require victories in their final group matches.

Czechia will travel to Mexico City to face tournament co-hosts Mexico on June 24, while South Africa heads to Monterrey for a difficult clash against South Korea on the same day.

For both nations, nothing less than a positive result may be enough to extend their World Cup journey.
