Switzerland Crush Bosnia-Herzegovina 4-1 as Johan Manzambi’s Late Heroics Spark World Cup Statement

Switzerland produced a stunning late surge to defeat Bosnia-Herzegovina 4-1 on Thursday, with substitute Johan Manzambi scoring twice in the closing stages to propel the Swiss to the top of their World Cup group.

The 20-year-old forward announced himself on the global stage with his first-ever World Cup goal in the 74th minute before adding another in the 90th, capping a dominant Swiss performance that ultimately overwhelmed a resilient Bosnian side.

Manzambi Breaks the Deadlock

After being held to a disappointing 1-1 draw against Qatar in their opening match, Switzerland controlled possession and dictated much of the contest but struggled to convert their superiority into goals.

The breakthrough finally arrived in spectacular fashion after Manzambi entered the match as a substitute for winger Dan Ndoye. Just three minutes after stepping onto the pitch, the Freiburg attacker met Amar Memić’s attempted clearing header with a perfectly struck volley, leaving the goalkeeper with no chance and igniting celebrations among the Swiss supporters at SoFi Stadium.

Red Card Opens the Floodgates

Bosnia-Herzegovina’s hopes of mounting a comeback suffered a major setback in the closing stages when defender Tarik Muharemović was shown a red card for a dangerous challenge, reducing the Dragons to 10 men.

Switzerland immediately capitalized on the numerical advantage. Rubén Vargas doubled the lead in the 84th minute, giving the Swiss breathing room before combining brilliantly with Manzambi for the youngster’s second goal of the evening in the 90th minute.

Captain Granit Xhaka then completed the rout from the penalty spot with virtually the last kick of stoppage time, sealing an emphatic 4-1 victory.

Bosnia Show Resilience Despite Defeat

Although the scoreline suggested Swiss dominance, Bosnia-Herzegovina remained competitive for much of the encounter and continued to battle until the final whistle.

Their persistence was rewarded in the fourth minute of second-half stoppage time when Ermin Mahmić found the back of the net to score a late consolation goal.

The result keeps Bosnia’s hopes of progressing from the group alive, despite the setback, as they continue their quest to reach the knockout stage in only their second FIFA World Cup appearance.

Swiss Take Command of the Group

Switzerland’s convincing win provides a significant boost after their opening draw and places them in a strong position heading into the final round of group-stage matches.

The atmosphere at SoFi Stadium reflected the occasion, with more than 70,000 spectators in attendance. Bosnia’s passionate supporters created one of the tournament’s loudest environments, roaring their team on throughout the match despite seeing less possession and fewer scoring opportunities.

In the end, however, Switzerland’s quality, patience, and clinical finishing in the closing minutes proved decisive, with Johan Manzambi emerging as the standout performer on a memorable night for the Swiss.
