Switzerland booked their place in the Round of 16 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup with a disciplined 2-0 victory over Algeria in their Round of 32 encounter at BC Place Stadium in Vancouver.
An early goal from Breel Embolo and a quick second-half strike by Dan Ndoye proved enough for the Swiss to maintain their unbeaten tournament record and comfortably progress to the next stage.
Embolo Gives Switzerland an Early Lead
Switzerland made the perfect start, opening the scoring in the 10th minute through Breel Embolo.
The move began with an excellent run down the right flank by Johan Manzambi, who delivered a precise low cross into the penalty area. Embolo timed his run perfectly and calmly tapped the ball into the net from close range to give Switzerland a 1-0 advantage.
The early breakthrough allowed the Swiss to settle into their rhythm and control possession for much of the opening half.
Ndoye Doubles the Advantage
Switzerland struck again immediately after the restart.
Just seconds into the second half, Dan Ndoye capitalized on defensive hesitation from Algeria before finishing confidently in the 46th minute to double his side’s lead.
The goal put Switzerland firmly in command and left Algeria with a mountain to climb.
Swiss Midfield Dominates
Switzerland’s experienced midfield duo of Granit Xhaka and Remo Freuler played a crucial role in the victory.
Both players controlled the tempo of the game while limiting Algeria’s attacking opportunities, effectively cutting off passing lanes to key playmakers Riyad Mahrez and Ibrahim Maza.
Their disciplined defensive display ensured Algeria struggled to create clear scoring chances throughout the contest.
Petković Faces Former Team
The knockout tie carried added significance as Algeria head coach Vladimir Petković came up against the nation he previously managed.
Petković spent seven years in charge of Switzerland between 2014 and 2021, guiding many of the current Swiss stars—including Granit Xhaka and Breel Embolo—before taking over as Algeria’s head coach.
Despite his familiarity with the Swiss squad, Petković was unable to prevent his former side from advancing.
Switzerland Await Ghana or Colombia
With the victory, Switzerland advances to the Round of 16, where they will play on Tuesday, July 7, 2026.
Their next opponents will be determined by the outcome of the upcoming Round of 32 match between Ghana and Colombia, with a place in the World Cup quarter-finals at stake.
