Ghanaian reggae and dancehall musician Ras Kuuku has opened up about the difficult childhood experiences that shaped his life before he achieved success in the music industry.
The Puom Music boss revealed that he sold sachet water, popularly known as “pure water,” food and rubber bags while growing up in Dome, Accra.
Speaking in an interview on Joy Prime, Ras Kuuku, born Kojo Kurankye, explained that he began engaging in petty trading after losing his mother at an early age.
He was subsequently raised by his aunt, who ensured that he continued his education despite the family’s financial difficulties.
Ras Kuuku recalled moving from Dome to Nungua Presby, where he continued schooling while taking on different jobs to support himself.
He also shared an unusual experience from his early education, revealing that he skipped some classes before eventually returning to class two so he could study in the same class as his aunt’s son.
Despite the hardship he experienced, Ras Kuuku said he remained determined to build a successful future.
His original ambition was to become a professional footballer. The musician described himself as a talented player who took the sport seriously before music eventually became the path that transformed his life.
The young boy who once walked through the streets selling basic items later developed into one of Ghana’s recognized reggae and dancehall performers.
Ras Kuuku has built a strong following through conscious music that frequently addresses poverty, perseverance, social inequality and the experiences of young people from disadvantaged communities.
His background has helped shape his connection with grassroots audiences and strengthened his reputation as an advocate for “ghetto youth.”
A major milestone in his career came in 2020 when he won Reggae/Dancehall Artiste of the Year at the Vodafone Ghana Music Awards.
