A Special Committee in Ghana has completed a review of 2,080 public sector recruitments, appointments, and promotions made after the December 7, 2024, general elections. The exercise, carried out in March 2026, was initiated by the administration of President John Dramani Mahama to assess whether last-minute hires under the government of former President Nana Akufo-Addo complied with established civil service procedures.

Out of the total reviewed, 1,201 appointments were upheld. The committee determined that these positions satisfied all administrative and legal requirements and had been properly issued before the December 7 election date.

However, 541 appointments were revoked. According to the findings, these recruitments failed to comply with due process, either because the processes were completed after the December 7 deadline or because they breached directives governing the transition period.

The committee also upheld 338 positions specifically reserved for persons with disabilities. It cited full compliance with recruitment standards and emphasized the government’s continued commitment to inclusivity in public sector employment.

The review was conducted by a committee established by Chief of Staff Julius Debrah. Minister for Government Communications Felix Kwakye Ofosu defended the process, stating that it was not a politically motivated purge but a necessary measure to ensure accountability and uphold the rule of law.

Notably, the 541 revocations recommended by the Special Committee were fewer than the 879 appointments that various institutions had initially cancelled on their own following the Chief of Staff’s original directive. The outcome, officials say, reflects a more measured and legally grounded review process.
