The Manya Krobo Traditional Council has honored Vice President Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang with the 2026 Yokama Award in recognition of her leadership, contributions to national development and influence as a role model for young women.
Nene Sakite II, the Konor of Manya Krobo and President of the Eastern Regional House of Chiefs, conferred the honor on her on October 26, 2026, at the forecourt of the Konor’s Palace in Odumase-Krobo.
The presentation formed part of a special celebration of women during the 133rd Ngmayem Festival, bringing together cultural heritage and recognition of women’s achievements.
Yokama, meaning “Ideal Woman,” is an honor reserved for women whose leadership, integrity and service have made a positive impact on society. The Traditional Council recognised Professor Opoku-Agyemang’s record of public service and the example she continues to set for younger generations.
Established in 2003, the award is presented annually in October during the weeklong Ngmayem festivities. It provides an opportunity for the Manya Krobo State to celebrate women who have distinguished themselves through their work and contributions to society.
Professor Opoku-Agyemang, who became Ghana’s first female Vice President on January 7, 2025, accepted the honor at a cultural gathering that highlighted the importance of women’s leadership and empowerment.
Her recognition added a national dimension to the festival’s celebration of women, acknowledging both her historic position and her wider contribution to Ghana’s development.
