Boy, 11, Drowns in River Owabi as Residents Rescue Two Others

An 11-year-old boy has died after a swimming outing with other children at Akropong in the Atwima Nwabiagya North District of the Ashanti Region.

The incident happened in the River Owabi on Monday, October 5, 2026, when about seven boys reportedly entered the water to swim.

Residents said three of the children encountered difficulty. Community members rescued two, but attempts to locate the third boy that day were unsuccessful.

The Assembly Member for the area, Andrews Kofi Nti, told Atinka News that traditional authorities and security personnel joined the search after being informed of the incident.

He said the search resumed on Tuesday, October 6, and the boy’s body was recovered after traditional rites were performed.

According to Nti, police subsequently released the body to the bereaved family for burial.
