Carrick Backs United’s Squad Depth as Mainoo and Shaw Miss Atlético Clash

Carrick Backs United’s Squad Depth as Mainoo

Manchester United manager Michael Carrick has expressed confidence in his available players despite losing Kobbie Mainoo and Luke Shaw for Tuesday’s UEFA Champions League encounter with Atlético Madrid.

Speaking in Madrid on Monday, October 12, Carrick confirmed that both players had remained in Manchester after picking up injuries during Saturday’s 1-1 draw with Tottenham Hotspur.

Mainoo suffered a knock in the match, while Shaw was substituted late on. Their absence adds to United’s selection concerns, with Noussair Mazraoui, Patrick Dorgu and Benjamin Sesko also sidelined.

Shaw’s withdrawal further restricts Carrick’s defensive choices, particularly at left-back, where Dorgu is unavailable and Mazraoui cannot provide an alternative.

However, the United manager rejected suggestions that the travelling squad lacked sufficient depth.

“We’re not light on numbers, no,” Carrick said, acknowledging the injuries but maintaining that he had options for the European fixture.

There was encouragement in the inclusion of Matthijs de Ligt, who travelled to Spain as he continues working towards full fitness. Young defender Dan Armer has also joined the squad, giving Carrick another defensive option.

The manager welcomed the opportunity for academy players to experience preparations for a Champions League match, saying involvement at this level could benefit their development.

United must now adjust their midfield and defense for the meeting with Atlético, with Carrick backing those available to respond to the challenge. No return dates were provided for Mainoo or Shaw.
