The Bishop of the Navrongo-Bolgatanga Catholic Diocese, Most Rev. Alfred Agyenta, has urged Ghanaians to embrace and practice Christian values as part of efforts to address the country’s social, economic and moral challenges.
He said Christian principles, when sincerely applied in everyday life, could help curb corruption, greed, selfishness and other behaviors undermining national development.
Bishop Agyenta’s message was delivered on his behalf by Rev. Fr. Vitus A. Adiita during the Diocesan Congress of the Catholic Charismatic Renewal. The event took place at Bolgatanga Senior High School in Winkongo, within the Talensi District.
According to the bishop, authentic Christian ministry must be rooted in a proper understanding of the mission of Jesus Christ. He explained that Christ demonstrated sacrificial leadership by choosing to serve others and give his life for humanity rather than seeking personal recognition or privilege.
He therefore encouraged Christians, particularly those in leadership positions, to see public service as a responsibility to promote the welfare of others instead of an opportunity for personal gain.
Bishop Agyenta also stressed the importance of instilling moral discipline and Christian values in young people. He said such training could help develop responsible citizens committed to patriotism, integrity and national unity.
The congress further addressed recurring incidents of student unrest in second-cycle institutions. Church leaders and school chaplains observed that spiritual formation and moral education could play a significant role in reducing indiscipline, violence and destructive behavior among students.
They called for stronger cooperation among parents, teachers, chaplains and religious organizations to guide young people and help them make responsible decisions.
Family life and marriage were also central to discussions at the gathering. Participants emphasized the importance of premarital counselling and continuous family-life education in preparing couples for the responsibilities of marriage.
They noted that stable and morally grounded families provide children with the discipline, values and emotional support needed to become responsible members of society.
Bishop Agyenta maintained that Ghana’s development challenges cannot be resolved through policies and economic interventions alone. He said lasting national progress also requires a moral transformation anchored in honesty, sacrifice, compassion and service to others.
