The Western North Regional Police Command has interdicted eight police officers following a fatal shooting incident that occurred in Sefwi Sayerano in the Juaboso District, leaving two residents dead and three others injured.
The incident, which happened on July 7, 2026, has triggered a police investigation after a confrontation between officers and community members escalated into gunfire.
The Police Command has assured the public that a transparent investigation will be conducted and that any officer found responsible for wrongdoing will face appropriate sanctions.
Attempted Arrest Leads to Community Clash
According to reports, officers from the Sefwi Wiawso Divisional Police Command entered the Sefwi Sayerano community as part of an operation to arrest a suspected drug peddler.
However, the operation reportedly faced resistance after a large group of residents confronted the officers and attempted to prevent the arrest.
The confrontation developed into a physical altercation between the police team and community members, creating a tense situation that eventually resulted in officers discharging their firearms.
Two Residents Killed, Three Injured
During the incident, three individuals sustained gunshot wounds.
Two of the victims reportedly died from their injuries at the scene, while the third injured person, along with two other survivors, were transported for emergency medical care.
The three injured residents are currently receiving treatment at the Asafo Roman Catholic Hospital, where medical teams are attending to their conditions.
The deaths have caused concern within the community, with residents demanding accountability and a full investigation into the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
Officers Removed From Duty
Following the incident, the Western North Regional Police Command announced that all eight officers involved in the operation had been interdicted.
The interdiction is intended to allow investigators to conduct their work without interference while ensuring that the officers involved do not participate in active policing duties during the inquiry.
The Command said the action reflects its commitment to accountability and respect for due process.
IGP Orders Independent Investigation
The Inspector-General of Police (IGP) has directed the Police Professional Standards Bureau (PPSB) to lead a comprehensive investigation into the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
The decision places the inquiry under an independent professional body rather than relying solely on regional police structures.
Investigators are expected to establish the sequence of events, determine whether the use of firearms was justified, and identify whether any officers breached police procedures.
Calm Restored After Community Tension
Following brief protests in parts of the community, the Ghana Police Service worked with traditional authorities and local leaders to restore calm in Sefwi Sayerano.
Authorities have continued engaging residents as investigations progress and have called for peace while the official process takes its course.
