Ethiopia has achieved a historic milestone in its agricultural sector, generating $3 billion in coffee export revenue during the 2025/2026 fiscal year—the highest annual earnings from coffee in the country’s history.
The record-breaking performance highlights the continued strength of Ethiopia’s coffee industry, which remains the nation’s leading agricultural export and contributes more than 30% of total export earnings.
Historic Growth in Coffee Exports
The achievement was confirmed by Ethiopia’s Minister of Agriculture, Addisu Arega, who described the milestone as a major step forward for the country’s export sector.
Coffee export revenues have risen sharply over the past several years, reflecting sustained growth in production, market access, and global demand.
Ethiopia’s Coffee Export Revenue by Year:
- 2023: $1.40 billion
- 2024: $1.43 billion
- 2025: $2.65 billion
- 2025/2026 Fiscal Year: $3.00 billion
The latest figures represent a significant increase from previous years and underscore the growing international demand for Ethiopian coffee.
Reforms Drive Record Performance
According to the Ethiopian Coffee and Tea Authority (ECTA), the record earnings are the result of comprehensive macroeconomic reforms and improvements throughout the coffee supply chain.
Authorities attribute the success to stronger quality control measures, expanded local coffee processing, and improved origin traceability, enabling Ethiopian exporters to secure higher prices in premium international markets.
These initiatives have strengthened the country’s reputation as one of the world’s leading producers of specialty coffee while increasing the value of its exports.
Growing Demand from Emerging Markets
The expansion of Ethiopia’s coffee exports has also been fueled by rising demand from emerging markets.
China has become one of the fastest-growing destinations for Ethiopian coffee, with purchases increasing significantly following the introduction of zero-tariff trade agreements. The growing Chinese market has helped diversify Ethiopia’s export destinations and create new opportunities for producers and exporters.
Government Targets $6 Billion by 2031
Building on the sector’s strong momentum, the Ethiopian government has introduced a new five-year national coffee development package aimed at transforming the industry.
The strategy focuses on modernizing farming practices, improving productivity, and increasing average yields across coffee-growing regions.
By enhancing cultivation techniques and strengthening the entire coffee value chain, the government hopes to double annual coffee export revenue to $6 billion by 2031, positioning Ethiopia as an even more dominant player in the global coffee market.
The ambitious target reflects Ethiopia’s commitment to expanding one of its most important export industries while creating greater economic opportunities for millions of farmers who depend on coffee production for their livelihoods.
