A major fault on the Akosombo-Volta transmission line has disrupted electricity supply to parts of Ghana following a disturbance on the national power system early Thursday morning, August 20, 2026.
The Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) said the fault occurred at about 4:30 a.m. and triggered the automatic shutdown of the Akosombo generating units, as well as some thermal power plants.
According to GRIDCo, the shutdown was activated by the power system’s protection mechanisms to prevent further damage and safeguard the stability of the national transmission network.
The incident resulted in power outages in several parts of the country.
GRIDCo said its engineers, in collaboration with other stakeholders in the power sector, immediately moved to isolate the affected transmission line and commenced efforts to restore the system.
Electricity has since been restored to some affected areas, while technical teams continue working to reconnect customers who remain without power.
The company said its technical personnel have been fully mobilised and are working to restore power to all affected areas as quickly and safely as possible.
GRIDCo apologised to customers for the inconvenience caused by the outage and assured the public that updates would be provided as restoration efforts progress.
The company also appealed to affected customers and the general public for patience and understanding as work continues to restore normal electricity supply.
