The Northern Regional Police Command has arrested five people and seized firearms, ammunition and substances suspected to be illegal drugs during an intelligence-led operation in the Tamale metropolis.
The Regional Special Operations Team, popularly known as RED MARIA, carried out the raid at the Aboabo Scrap Area following information about suspected drug dealing, illicit distribution networks and related criminal activities.
Police identified the suspects as Ibrahim Issahaku, 39; Mohamed Osman Awal, 41; Kwame Boateng, 28; Mohamed John, 28; and Mohamed Nawas, 25.
Boateng is suspected of direct involvement in drug dealing, while John and Nawas are alleged to be drug users. Investigations are continuing to determine the roles of the other suspects.
During a search of the location, officers reportedly recovered several pistols and live rounds of ammunition.
Police also seized quantities of dried leaves suspected to be cannabis and pharmaceutical drugs believed to include tramadol. The exhibits have been retained for forensic examination and use as evidence in the investigation.
The Ghana Police Service said the operation had disrupted the suspected circulation of illegal drugs and weapons within the metropolis.
All five suspects remain in police custody to assist investigators. They are expected to be arraigned before a court after the necessary investigations and forensic analyses have been completed.
The allegations against the suspects have not yet been proven in court, and they are presumed innocent until found guilty.
