GES Orders Two Education Directors to Step Aside Over Obuasi SHTS Probe

The Ghana Education Service (GES) has directed the Ashanti Regional Director of Education, Dr. William Amankrah Appiah, and the Obuasi East Municipal Director of Education, Mr. Kwamena Owusu-Nketiah, to step aside immediately as investigations continue into alleged sexual misconduct at Obuasi Senior High Technical School.

According to the GES, the directive is intended to prevent potential interference, or any perception of interference, in the investigation.

Both officials have been instructed to hand over their offices and all state property in their possession to the Deputy Ashanti Regional Director of Education, Mr. Thomas Kwame Boateng.

The investigation concerns allegations of sexual misconduct involving the school’s headmaster, Zakaria Abdulai. The GES has reiterated that he remains interdicted and has urged the public to disregard claims that he has been cleared.

The decision to temporarily remove the two directors from their posts comes amid scrutiny of how earlier complaints were handled by education authorities. Reports indicate that concerns involving female students had been brought to the attention of local education offices earlier in the year.

Those reports have raised questions about the response to the initial complaints, an issue surrounding the ongoing investigation.

The directive for the directors to step aside is a precautionary administrative measure to facilitate the probe and does not establish wrongdoing on their part. The allegations against the headmaster also remain subject to investigation.
