Ghana Police Deploy Thousands of Officers for Nationwide National Clean-Up Exercise

Police Deploy Thousands of Officers

The Ghana Police Service has deployed thousands of officers across the country to participate in the government’s two-day National General Cleaning Exercise aimed at restoring communities affected by recent flooding.

The exercise, taking place on Friday, July 10, and Saturday, July 11, 2026, forms part of a nationwide environmental sanitation campaign directed by President John Dramani Mahama following the devastating floods that struck several parts of the country on June 29.

Police Officers Mobilized Nationwide

As part of the operation, the Police Administration has mobilized personnel from commands across the country, including the Asokwa Divisional Police Command, to work alongside residents in cleaning communities and improving sanitation.

Officers have been deployed to streets, markets, drainage systems, and other public spaces to support the nationwide effort to restore affected areas and reduce environmental hazards.

Equipped for Community Clean-Up

Police personnel have been provided with a range of cleaning equipment, including brooms, shovels, wheelbarrows, and tricycles, to facilitate the exercise.

Their responsibilities include desilting clogged drains, sweeping streets, clearing debris left behind by floodwaters, removing weeds, and cleaning market centers and major roads.

Authorities say the initiative is intended to improve sanitation, reduce the risk of disease outbreaks, and help prevent future flooding by ensuring that drainage systems remain free of obstructions.

Multi-Agency National Exercise

The National General Cleaning Exercise is being undertaken through a coordinated effort involving several government institutions and security agencies.

The Ghana Police Service is working alongside the Ghana Armed Forces, Ghana National Fire Service, and Ghana Prisons Service to carry out sanitation activities across the country.

The exercise is also being supported by the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO), the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA), and private waste management company Zoomlion Ghana Limited, among other stakeholders.

Cabinet Meetings Rescheduled

To demonstrate the government’s commitment to the exercise, President Mahama rescheduled Friday’s Cabinet meetings to allow ministers and senior government officials to participate in clean-up activities within their respective regions.

The move is intended to encourage greater public participation and reinforce the importance of environmental sanitation.

Public Encouraged to Participate

The Ghana Police Service and the Ministry of Local Government have called on residents, transport operators, traders, and business owners to join the exercise by cleaning their homes, workplaces, and surrounding environments.

Authorities have stressed that maintaining clean surroundings is a shared responsibility and warned that failure to comply with sanitation regulations could attract penalties under existing local governance and public health laws.

The nationwide exercise forms part of broader government efforts to improve sanitation standards, strengthen disaster preparedness, and build more resilient communities following the recent floods.
