The Government of Ghana is set to commence the final phase of its voluntary repatriation program on Friday, July 25, 2026, to bring home nearly 900 Ghanaian nationals currently in South Africa.
The announcement was made by Ghana’s High Commissioner to South Africa, Benjamin Quashie, during a broadcast from Pretoria on Tuesday, July 14, 2026.
Final Evacuation Targets Registered Returnees
According to the High Commissioner, the final operation will focus on approximately 900 Ghanaian citizens who have officially registered for the program and successfully completed the required security screening process.
The exercise has received approval from the South African Department of Home Affairs and Border Management Authorities, allowing Ghana to operate daily flights from July 25 until all approved returnees have been safely transported back home.
High Commissioner Quashie stressed that the program is strictly limited to individuals who have already completed the official registration process.
He clarified that no new registrations will be accepted during this final phase, and only those whose details have already been verified will be eligible to travel.
Repatriation Follows Xenophobic Attacks in South Africa
The government-led repatriation initiative was launched by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in collaboration with the Office of the President following a series of xenophobic attacks and anti-migrant protests in parts of South Africa.
The unrest left several Ghanaian nationals displaced, with many forced to seek temporary shelter in hotels, churches, and other emergency accommodation centers.
The voluntary return program was established to provide affected citizens with a safe and organized pathway back to Ghana.
More Than 900 Ghanaians Already Returned
The upcoming operation follows three earlier phases of the repatriation exercise, which successfully transported 926 Ghanaian nationals back to Accra earlier in the year.
Officials say the final deployment is expected to bring the broader evacuation program to a close once all registered returnees have been assisted.
The government has reiterated its commitment to protecting the welfare of Ghanaian citizens abroad while working with international partners to respond to emergencies affecting its diaspora community.
