Ghana’s Ministry of the Interior has issued an emergency weather advisory, urging residents of the Greater Accra Region to prepare for the possibility of flash flooding on Monday, July 6, 2026.
The alert was sent directly to residents via SMS on Sunday evening, warning that moderate rainfall is expected between 4:00 a.m. and 7:00 a.m. with an estimated 40 percent probability of occurrence.
The advisory comes just one week after heavy rains caused severe flooding across parts of the capital, inundating major roads and disrupting transportation.
Residents in Flood-Prone Areas Advised to Exercise Caution
In its advisory, the Ministry of the Interior urged residents, particularly those living in low-lying and flood-prone communities, to remain vigilant and take precautionary measures.
Authorities identified these areas as being most vulnerable to flash flooding should rainfall intensify during the early morning hours.
The ministry also advised motorists and pedestrians to avoid driving or walking through flooded roads, bridges, and drainage channels, warning that rapidly rising water levels can pose serious safety risks.
Residents have further been encouraged to monitor weather updates through official channels and stay alert as conditions may change quickly during the morning commute.
GMet Forecast Predicts Widespread Unsettled Weather
The emergency alert aligns with the latest weather outlook issued by the Ghana Meteorological Agency, which forecasts widespread unsettled weather across much of the country over an 18-hour period.
According to the forecast, thunderstorms and persistent rainfall are expected to affect parts of northern Ghana, the middle belt, and the transition zones overnight. Southern coastal areas, including Greater Accra, are also expected to experience cloudy conditions with intermittent rainfall.
Emergency Services on High Alert
Emergency response agencies, including the National Disaster Management Organization> (NADMO), remain on standby to respond to any flooding incidents or weather-related emergencies.
Authorities have urged the public to prioritize safety, follow official advisories, and report emergencies promptly should flooding occur.
With the rainy season ongoing, officials say continued public vigilance will be essential in minimizing the impact of any localized flooding across the Greater Accra Region.
