President John Dramani Mahama has announced a new policy direction linking Ghana’s economic recovery efforts to improved pension benefits and expanded healthcare support for retired citizens.
The President made the pledge during the annual Republic Day Senior Citizens’ Luncheon, held at the Presidential Villa in Accra on Tuesday, June 30, 2026, where government officials, policymakers, and prominent public figures gathered to honour elderly citizens.
Linking Economic Growth to Pension Increases
President Mahama outlined a strategy aimed at ensuring that improvements in Ghana’s macroeconomic performance translate directly into better living conditions for pensioners.
He explained that as key government initiatives—including the 24-Hour Economy policy and the Accelerated Export Development Programme—boost national revenue, pension payments will be adjusted upward in line with broader public sector salary reviews.
According to the President, the goal is to ensure that senior citizens benefit directly from sustained economic recovery and national productivity gains.
Expanded Healthcare Support Through MahamaCares
A major component of the President’s announcement focused on healthcare access for the elderly.
He urged senior citizens to enroll in the Ghana Medical Trust Fund (MahamaCares), a dedicated healthcare financing initiative designed to support treatment for chronic illnesses and non-communicable diseases such as diabetes, hypertension, and cancer.
The programme is expected to provide targeted financial assistance for medical care, reduce out-of-pocket expenses, and strengthen healthcare delivery for aging populations across the country.
Preserving Family-Based Elder Care Traditions
President Mahama also emphasized the importance of cultural values in shaping elder care policy.
He cautioned against the increasing shift toward institutional care homes, stating that Ghana and broader African societies have long traditions of family-based support systems that ensure dignity and respect for older generations.
He reaffirmed that government policy will continue to support aging citizens within community and family structures rather than replacing them with institutional alternatives.
High-Profile Attendance at Luncheon
The Republic Day Senior Citizens’ Luncheon brought together a wide cross-section of Ghanaian society, including political leaders, medical experts, and cultural icons.
Notable attendees included:
- Vice President Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang
- Renowned physician and statesman Prof. Kwabena Frimpong-Boateng
- Highlife legend Daddy Lumba
- Former world boxing champion Azumah Nelson
- Politician and activist Samia Nkrumah
The event featured speeches, tributes, and cultural performances celebrating the contributions of Ghana’s elderly population.
Government Commitment to Dignified Aging
Concluding his remarks, President Mahama reiterated that meaningful appreciation for senior citizens must go beyond ceremonial recognition.
He stressed that true respect lies in building sustainable economic and healthcare systems that reflect the decades of service, labour, and sacrifice made by Ghana’s older generation.
The administration says it remains committed to strengthening social protection systems and ensuring that elderly citizens live with dignity, security, and adequate access to essential services.
