President John Dramani Mahama is expected to perform a groundbreaking ceremony in early October 2026 for the construction of a new sports stadium in the Bono Region.
The project was announced on Monday, September 21, by Senior Kwame Kusi, the Bono Regional Public Relations Officer of the National Sports Authority.
According to the NSA official, the government has secured 35 acres of land at Old Abesim in the Sunyani Municipality for the development.
The proposed facility will have a seating capacity of 40,000 and will be constructed to meet FIFA standards.
It will also be designed as a multipurpose venue capable of hosting football matches and other major sporting disciplines.
Construction is expected to take approximately three years, with completion targeted for 2029.
The project is intended to address the Bono Region’s longstanding need for a modern stadium capable of hosting major domestic and international sporting events.
Alongside the new development, the government plans to renovate and maintain the existing Sunyani Coronation Park.
The rehabilitation of Coronation Park is expected to ensure that the municipality retains a functional secondary venue for training sessions, local competitions and other sporting activities.
The planned stadium forms part of the government’s wider program to construct modern regional sports facilities across Ghana.
The initiative is expected to improve playing conditions, support athlete development and strengthen Ghana’s capacity to host national and international competitions.
