Manchester United defender Lisandro Martínez says frustration prompted his criticism of the club’s leadership following Tuesday’s 2–0 Champions League defeat to Atlético Madrid.
The Argentine released an Instagram statement on Wednesday, October 14, explaining his remarks without issuing an apology. His post-match comments had questioned United’s summer recruitment and singled out Jason Wilcox over the support provided to manager Michael Carrick’s squad.
“After the match, I spoke out of anger and frustration at not getting the result we all wanted,” Martínez said.
He maintained that his comments reflected his determination to see United challenge for major honors, describing high expectations as part of the responsibility of representing the club.
However, Martínez also acknowledged that players must take primary responsibility for performances, placing himself among those required to improve.
He reaffirmed his confidence in his teammates, Carrick and the staff, saying collective effort and commitment were essential to restoring United’s competitiveness.
The statement sought to explain the emotion behind his criticism while retaining his call for greater ambition across the club.
