Nigeria Announces 30-Day Petrol Discount, Proposes ₦1,350 Price Ceiling

Nigeria Announces 30-Day Petrol Discount

Nigeria’s federal government has announced a temporary petrol discount and proposed a pricing mechanism aimed at easing pressure on households and businesses struggling with rising fuel costs.

Finance Minister Taiwo Oyedele said the initial 30-day discount would apply at Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited outlets, with public transport operators receiving priority. He said the company would sell petrol at cost, describing the intervention as distinct from a return to fuel subsidies. The minister did not specify the discount amount in the announcement.

Petrol prices have climbed to about ₦1,400 per liter, increasing transport costs and household expenses. The government is also negotiating a ₦1,350-per-litre ceiling, under which refiners and importers would temporarily absorb costs above that level and recover the difference when market conditions improve. The proposed ceiling would undergo monthly reviews.

The intervention has drawn opposition criticism. Atiku Abubakar questioned its durability, asking, “What happens on Day 31?” His response reflects concerns about whether temporary relief can address sustained pressure on living costs.

The announcement has renewed debate over how President Bola Tinubu’s administration can cushion consumers against fuel-price shocks while maintaining its commitment to market reforms.
