The Enugu State Police Command has arrested 30-year-old Okpara Chibuike Emmanuel over the alleged killing of his girlfriend and concealment of her body inside the toilet of his apartment.
Police Public Relations Officer SP Daniel Ndukwe confirmed the arrest on Tuesday, September 22, 2026, following the discovery at Olympic Layout, also known as One-Day, in Enugu.
The deceased has been identified only as Chinyere. Police are still working to establish her surname, age and residential address.
According to preliminary police investigations, Emmanuel allegedly told investigators that he and Chinyere became involved in an argument on September 19 over claims concerning HIV transmission.
During the confrontation, the suspect allegedly struck Chinyere on the head with a wooden pestle, causing her death. He is further accused of wrapping her body in a large nylon sheet and concealing it inside the toilet.
The incident reportedly came to light on Monday, September 21, after residents detected an offensive smell coming from the apartment. Neighbors forced their way inside, discovered the decomposing body and apprehended the suspect.
An angry crowd subsequently gathered at the scene and reportedly attempted to attack Emmanuel. Officers from the Awkunanaw Police Division arrived at about 6:30 p.m., rescued him from the mob and took him into custody.
The victim’s remains were transported to a mortuary for preservation and an autopsy as investigators work to determine the full circumstances surrounding her death.
Enugu State Commissioner of Police CP Mamman Bitrus Giwa has directed the State Criminal Investigation Department to conduct a comprehensive investigation into the case.
Police said the suspect would be arraigned after investigations are completed. He remains presumed innocent until proven guilty by a competent court.
The Command also cautioned the public against mob action and advised people to keep trusted relatives or friends informed about their movements and whereabouts as a personal safety measure.
