One Recaptured, Five Sought After Konongo Police Cell Escape

How six fugitives escaped through hand-dug hole

Police have rearrested one of six remand prisoners who escaped from the Konongo Divisional Police Station in the Asante Akyem Central Municipality of the Ashanti Region, while efforts continue to locate the remaining five.

The escape reportedly occurred at dawn on October 14, 2026, after the inmates broke through a cell wall and fled the station.

According to accounts of the incident, the prisoners held a loud session of singing and prayers, allegedly using the noise to conceal their efforts to create an opening in the concrete wall.

The breach reportedly led into a washroom area, allowing the six men to squeeze out of the cell before scaling the station’s perimeter barriers. The precise tools used to break through the wall have not been established.

A subsequent police search led to the recapture of one of the escapees at a hideout in a suburb of Kumasi. The names of the prisoners and the charges for which they were being held had not been publicly disclosed in the reports.

Following the incident, Municipal Chief Executive Dr. Ebenezer Ekow Aidoo confirmed that the Municipal Security Council had taken steps to strengthen security at the station.

The measures include reinforcing the cell walls, improving security lighting, deploying additional personnel at night and installing surveillance cameras to help prevent another escape.

Search operations remain underway for the five prisoners still at large.
