The Ghana Police Service has appealed to the public to participate in a nationwide two-day clean-up exercise aimed at restoring flood-affected communities and improving environmental sanitation across the country.
The exercise is being organised following a directive from President John Dramani Mahama as part of a national campaign to clear debris left behind by the recent floods and promote cleaner, healthier and safer communities.
Police officers will join residents, local authorities and other stakeholders in communities nationwide to undertake various sanitation activities. These include clearing refuse and flood debris, desilting choked drains, sweeping streets, brushing kerbs, removing sand and weeds from roads, fumigating affected areas, and cleaning markets, lorry parks, recreational parks and other public spaces.
The Ghana Police Service described the initiative as a collective responsibility and encouraged members of the public to actively support the campaign by working alongside officers to improve sanitation and reduce the risk of future flooding.
Meanwhile, the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) said Friday’s exercise will bring together the Assembly, security services, private institutions, educational institutions, waste management companies and the general public to undertake clean-up activities across the capital.
According to the Assembly, Saturday’s exercise will focus on neighbourhood-level clean-up efforts, with residents, volunteer groups, security agencies and other stakeholders leading sanitation activities within their respective communities.
The AMA has also appealed to market leaders, transport unions, business associations, religious organisations and community leaders to mobilise their members to participate fully in the exercise and comply with the temporary closure directive issued to facilitate the nationwide campaign.
