Residents of Benchemaa Barrier, Nkatieso and Benchemaa in the Juaboso District of the Western North Region have raised concerns about a cargo truck abandoned on the Benchemaa Barrier-Oseikojokrom highway.
Community members said the heavy-duty vehicle has remained on the busy road for more than a year, creating a serious danger to motorists and other road users.
Residents who spoke to the Ghana News Agency said they had received no information about the identity or whereabouts of the vehicle’s driver or owner.
A community spokesperson, Kwame Nkuah, said the truck was parked in a dangerous position and had created a blind spot along the highway.
Tricycle operators, popularly known as Pragya riders, have also expressed concern about the obstruction. They warned that the truck could cause a serious accident, particularly at night when visibility is reduced.
Samuel Agyekum, the Assembly Member for the Sayerano Electoral Area, confirmed that the matter had been raised repeatedly during meetings of the district assembly.
He explained that attempts to remove the truck had stalled because the district did not have access to a functioning towing vehicle capable of moving the heavy-duty truck.
Local authorities have since reported the hazard to the Asawinso District Police Command and requested logistical assistance to clear it from the road.
Residents are urging the police, the Juaboso District Assembly and road safety authorities to intervene before the abandoned vehicle causes a fatal accident.
Their concerns come amid renewed national efforts by the National Road Safety Authority to address the dangers posed by broken-down and abandoned vehicles on public roads.
Under the updated road traffic arrangements, relevant authorities may remove vehicles that obstruct roads and, under prescribed conditions, dispose of unclaimed vehicles after the required procedures have been followed.
