Rubio Urges Ethiopia and Eritrea to Ease Tensions Through Dialogue

Rubio Urges Ethiopia and Eritrea

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has called for restraint between Ethiopia and Eritrea, warning that the Horn of Africa cannot withstand another conflict.

Rubio raised the concerns during a telephone conversation with Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed on Wednesday, October 14, according to the US State Department. The discussion focused on heightened tensions between the neighboring countries and the need for all sides to de-escalate.

Washington urged dialogue based on the 2018 Ethiopia-Eritrea peace framework, presenting diplomatic engagement as the sustainable way to resolve internal and cross-border disputes. Rubio also emphasized respect for national sovereignty and territorial integrity.

The intervention comes amid renewed fighting in Ethiopia’s northern Tigray region, where federal forces and the Tigray People’s Liberation Front have returned to conflict. The violence has weakened the 2022 peace agreement and intensified concerns about a wider regional confrontation.

Ethiopia has accused Eritrean troops of entering and occupying parts of its territory. Eritrea, meanwhile, has characterized Ethiopia’s statements as a declaration of war. The competing accusations have deepened tensions already influenced by disputes over access to the Red Sea.

Rubio’s appeal places renewed emphasis on the peace framework reached in 2018 as a basis for reducing tensions and restoring diplomatic engagement between Addis Ababa and Asmara.
