Thomas Partey Denied Entry to Canada, Set to Miss World Cup Opener Against Panama

Thomas Pattey

Ghana’s preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup have suffered a significant setback after midfielder Thomas Partey was denied entry into Canada, ruling him out of the Black Stars’ opening Group L match against Panama.

The decision means Ghana will have to begin its World Cup campaign without one of its most experienced players when the teams meet in Toronto on June 17.

Canadian Authorities Reject Visa Application

Canadian authorities reportedly refused Partey’s visa application due to his ongoing legal proceedings in the United Kingdom. The midfielder is currently facing seven counts of rape and one count of sexual assault, allegations to which he has pleaded not guilty.

Under Canada’s immigration laws, officials may deem foreign nationals “criminally inadmissible” if they are considered to have committed or been convicted of certain offences. As a result, Partey was not granted permission to enter the country while his case remains before the courts.

The 32-year-old has been released on bail and continues to contest all charges against him.

Legal Proceedings Still Ongoing

Partey’s trial was initially expected to begin in November 2026 but could be postponed until early 2027, according to reports surrounding the case.

The Ghana international has consistently denied the allegations and is awaiting the legal process to determine the outcome.

Villarreal Midfielder to Miss Only One Group Match

Although he will be unavailable for Ghana’s tournament opener in Canada, Partey is expected to remain eligible for the Black Stars’ remaining Group L fixtures, both of which are scheduled to be played in the United States.

His anticipated availability for those matches offers Ghana a potential boost as the team seeks to progress beyond the group stage.

Ghana’s Remaining Group L Schedule
  • June 17, 2026: Ghana vs. Panama – Toronto, Canada (Partey unavailable)
  • June 23, 2026: Ghana vs. England – Foxborough, Massachusetts (Expected to be available)
  • June 27, 2026: Ghana vs. Croatia – Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (Expected to be available)
Blow to Ghana’s Midfield

Partey’s absence against Panama removes a key figure from Ghana’s midfield, where his experience, defensive awareness, and leadership have been instrumental over the years.

The midfielder currently plays for Spanish club Villarreal after departing Arsenal in June 2025. While the Black Stars will be without his services in their opening fixture, the coaching staff will hope to welcome him back for the crucial clashes against England and Croatia as Ghana pursues a place in the knockout rounds.
