Vice President Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang on Friday, July 10, 2026, joined residents of Ayawaso East to participate in the government’s National General Clean-Up Exercise, working alongside community members to desilt drains, collect refuse and restore sanitation in the area.
Her participation formed part of the nationwide two-day clean-up campaign, held from July 10 to 11 under the theme, “Our Actions, Our Future: Cleaning Ghana after the Floods.” The initiative was launched in response to the devastating floods of June 29, which claimed lives, displaced thousands of households and caused widespread destruction across Greater Accra and other parts of the country.
Ayawaso East is one of 104 flood-prone and flood-affected communities selected for the exercise across Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies in Greater Accra. Other participating areas include Ga South, Ga Central, Okaikwei North, Adenta, Madina, Tema West and LEKMA.
The government had earlier announced that both President John Dramani Mahama and Vice President Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang would personally take part in the exercise. However, their locations were intentionally withheld in advance. According to Greater Accra Regional Minister Linda Ocloo, the decision was intended to assess the preparedness and responsiveness of local assemblies without prior notice.
Dubbed “Green Heart” in Greater Accra, the campaign focuses on desilting choked drains, removing refuse and flood debris from public spaces, and improving environmental sanitation to reduce the risk of flooding ahead of the next rainy season.
