A young woman identified as Purity has died in a devastating house fire that broke out in the early hours of Tuesday, July 21, 2026, at a residential building along Ikpa Road in Uyo, the capital of Akwa Ibom State.
The tragic incident, which also left a popular local entertainer known as DJ Phantom seriously injured, has sparked widespread reactions on social media as authorities investigate the cause of the blaze.
Fire Breaks Out Before Dawn
According to eyewitness accounts, Purity had reportedly accompanied the male occupant of the apartment, identified by neighbors as Lawrence Nya, popularly known as DJ Phantom, to his residence after the pair spent the evening at a nightclub.
Residents said the fire broke out between 4:30 a.m. and 5:30 a.m., when the compound’s landlady, Patricia Udoukpo, noticed thick smoke billowing from the apartment and immediately raised an alarm.
Neighbors rushed to the scene in an attempt to rescue those trapped inside. However, several witnesses claimed they encountered strong electric shocks from the apartment’s iron burglar-proof door, making it difficult to gain immediate access to the room.
One Escapes, One Dies
Amid the chaos, DJ Phantom reportedly managed to escape the burning apartment but suffered severe injuries and was rushed for medical treatment.
Purity, however, was unable to make it out of the building. She became trapped inside the room and was pronounced dead after suffering extensive burns before rescuers could reach her.
Emergency responders later recovered her body from the apartment.
Battery Explosion Suspected
Although the exact cause of the fire has yet to be officially determined, preliminary accounts from residents suggest the blaze may have been triggered by an electric scooter battery that was left charging overnight.
Witnesses alleged that the battery overheated before exploding, causing a fire that quickly spread through the apartment.
The inferno reportedly destroyed the room and consumed household items valued at millions of naira.
Authorities have not confirmed the alleged battery malfunction, noting that forensic examinations are still ongoing.
Police Launch Investigation
Law enforcement officers and emergency personnel have since secured the scene and commenced investigations into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Police have appealed to members of the public to refrain from spreading speculation or unverified information on social media while investigators work to establish the exact cause of the fire.
The tragic death of Purity has generated an outpouring of grief online, with many Nigerians expressing condolences to her family and calling for greater awareness about fire safety, particularly the risks associated with charging lithium-ion batteries and other electronic devices overnight.
Authorities are expected to release further details after completing their investigation.
