The Greater Accra Regional Police Command has arrested two men for allegedly attempting to bribe a senior police officer with GH¢30,000 to secure the release of an impounded truck carrying substances suspected to be narcotics.
Details of the case were disclosed by the Command’s head of public relations during a press briefing on Tuesday, September 22, 2026.
The operation began on Friday, September 11, when intelligence officers from the Bravo SWAT Unit intercepted a Kia Rhino truck with registration number GN 5581-13 at Abofu, near Achimota.
A search of the vehicle reportedly uncovered 175 compressed slabs of dried leaves suspected to be narcotic substances. The items were concealed in three large sacks and three bags commonly known as “Ghana Must Go” bags.
According to police, the occupants abandoned the truck and escaped on foot after detecting the presence of the security officers.
The vehicle and its contents were subsequently transported to the Accra Regional Police Headquarters for further investigation.
Police said two men later appeared in connection with the impounded truck and its cargo. They were identified as Mark Bangel, a trader residing in Kpandai, and Zakaria Arafat, a mechanic living in Kpando.
The suspects allegedly offered GH¢30,000 to the Bravo SWAT Unit Commander, Deputy Superintendent of Police Steven Remy Salu, in exchange for the release of the vehicle.
DSP Salu rejected the alleged offer, leading to the immediate arrest of the two men. The GH¢30,000 was seized and retained as evidence.
During preliminary questioning, the suspects reportedly identified a third person, known only as Salam, as the driver responsible for transporting the suspected narcotics from Kpandai to Accra.
Police have launched a search for the third suspect as investigations continue. The seized substances are expected to undergo forensic examination to determine their exact composition.
Bangel and Arafat remain in police custody and are expected to be arraigned after investigations are completed. They remain presumed innocent until proven guilty by a competent court.
