The appointment of Senator Abdulaziz Yari as Director-General of the All Progressives Congress 2027 Presidential Campaign Council signals a deliberate effort by President Bola Tinubu and the ruling party to strengthen their electoral position across northern Nigeria.
Yari, a former governor of Zamfara State and former Chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum, brings extensive political experience and influential networks to the APC’s re-election campaign.
His selection is particularly significant because the Northwest represents Nigeria’s largest geopolitical voting bloc. Placing a prominent politician from the region at the center of the campaign could help the APC mobilize voters and strengthen alliances across the Northwest, North-Central and Northeast.
Having served two terms as governor, Yari has developed considerable grassroots structures and relationships with serving and former governors, legislators, traditional authorities and other political stakeholders.
His previous leadership of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum also gave him access to an extensive national network that could support fundraising, coalition-building and campaign coordination.
The appointment may also help the APC manage its internal divisions. Yari had previously been involved in party contests over the leadership of the National Assembly, exposing differences among influential blocs within the ruling party.
Giving him responsibility for the presidential campaign could bring those factions closer together and encourage party leaders to work under a unified re-election structure.
The APC’s strategy also appears to account for continuing divisions within the opposition.
During the 2023 presidential election, Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party, Peter Obi of the Labor Party and Rabiu Kwankwaso of the New Nigeria Peoples Party competed separately, dividing the non-incumbent vote across several parties and regional bases.
Efforts to establish a broad opposition coalition ahead of the 2027 election have continued to face disagreements over leadership, party platforms and the selection of a presidential candidate.
Unless the opposition succeeds in forming a cohesive alliance around a single ticket, the APC could once again benefit from facing several challengers competing for similar groups of voters.
The ruling party is also seeking an early organizational advantage by establishing its national campaign structure before the election period intensifies.
Yari is expected to lead the council alongside Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma, who has been named its secretary. Their early appointments give the party time to coordinate state-level structures, develop campaign messages and resolve internal disagreements.
The choice of Yari therefore combines regional calculations, grassroots mobilization and internal party management. It also positions the APC to take advantage of opposition fragmentation as political preparations for the 2027 presidential election gather momentum.
