Former Black Stars captain Asamoah Gyan is being mentioned as a potential candidate for the Ghana Football Association presidency, although he has not announced any intention to contest.
The speculation comes amid reports that incumbent president Kurt Okraku could decline to seek a third term. Okraku’s plans remain unconfirmed, leaving discussions about possible successors largely speculative.
Gyan, Ghana’s all-time leading goalscorer, has attracted support from some public figures who believe his experience and influence could benefit football administration. Among them is Appiah Stadium, who has publicly urged the former striker to consider running.
The debate over the GFA’s future leadership follows criticism of the Black Stars’ performances, including their failure to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations and a difficult start to the 2027 qualifying campaign.
Okraku remains eligible to pursue another term following amendments approved at the GFA’s 2025 Congress. The changes increased the presidential term limit from two four-year terms to three.
Gyan already holds roles within the football association. He was appointed GFA Ambassador for Ghana’s National Teams and Colts Football earlier this year and also serves as a player liaison manager.
Those appointments have kept him involved in the national team setup and youth football, but he has not indicated whether he intends to move into the association’s top leadership position.
Other names circulating in discussions about the next election include football administrator Samuel Anim Addo, Elloeny Amande and Black Stars captain Andre Ayew. Their inclusion in public debate does not amount to confirmation of candidacy.
For now, a possible Gyan bid remains a subject of speculation as stakeholders await formal declarations ahead of the next election cycle.
