FIFA President Gianni Infantino has defended the independence of FIFA’s Disciplinary Committee following widespread criticism over its decision to overturn the suspension of United States striker Folarin Balogun.
The controversy erupted after U.S. President Donald Trump publicly confirmed that he had spoken with Infantino to express concerns about Balogun’s automatic one-match suspension, which would have ruled the forward out of the United States’ FIFA World Cup Round of 16 clash against Belgium. The decision to allow Balogun to play has since sparked fierce debate across the football world, with critics questioning the integrity of FIFA’s disciplinary process.
Infantino Insists Judicial Bodies Act Independently
Responding to the growing backlash, Infantino stressed that FIFA’s judicial committees operate independently and are not influenced by political leaders or FIFA executives.
He acknowledged receiving a phone call from President Trump but said he informed the U.S. leader that the matter was already under review through FIFA’s established disciplinary procedures and would be decided solely by the organization’s independent legal authorities.
Infantino further emphasized that he does not interfere in disciplinary rulings, noting that he often reads committee decisions only after they have been issued. While he may personally agree or disagree with certain outcomes, he said he respects the independence of FIFA’s judicial bodies in order to safeguard the integrity of the competition.
Trump Defends His Intervention
Speaking from the Oval Office, President Trump defended his involvement, describing the referee’s original red-card decision against Balogun as “horrible.”
Trump maintained that he did not pressure FIFA to overturn the punishment but simply requested that the incident be reviewed. He later praised the disciplinary committee’s decision to reverse the suspension, calling it a “brilliant decision” that prevented what he described as a major injustice during the tournament.
Balogun Cleared to Play
FIFA’s Disciplinary Committee ultimately overturned Balogun’s automatic suspension by deferring the one-match ban to a probationary period, making the United States striker immediately eligible for the Round of 16 encounter against Belgium.
The ruling allowed one of the Americans’ key attacking players to remain available during the knockout stages, but it also ignited criticism from football officials and supporters around the world.
UEFA Condemns FIFA Decision
The decision drew a strong reaction from UEFA, European football’s governing body, which criticized FIFA’s handling of the case.
UEFA described the reversal as “unprecedented, incomprehensible and unjustifiable,” arguing that it undermined confidence in the consistency and fairness of football’s disciplinary system.
Belgium’s Appeal Rejected
The Belgian Football Federation also challenged Balogun’s eligibility before the Round of 16 match, arguing that the suspension should remain in force.
However, FIFA rejected the appeal, stating that Belgium was not a formal party to the original disciplinary proceedings and therefore had no standing to challenge the committee’s decision.
The controversy has continued to dominate discussion surrounding the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with the debate extending beyond Balogun’s availability to broader questions about transparency, judicial independence, and the role of political influence in international football governance.
