The Senegalese Football Federation (FSF) has announced the dismissal of head coach Pape Thiaw and his entire technical staff following an emergency executive committee meeting in Dakar, bringing an end to his nearly two-year spell in charge of the national team.
The decision comes in the aftermath of Senegal’s disappointing campaign at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, where the Lions of Teranga fell short of expectations despite entering the tournament as one of Africa’s strongest contenders.
World Cup Elimination Triggers Coaching Change
Senegal’s campaign came to an abrupt end in the Round of 32 after a dramatic defeat to Belgium.
After establishing a 2-0 advantage, the Lions of Teranga were unable to hold on as Belgium mounted a comeback, scoring twice in regulation before netting the decisive goal in extra time to secure a 3-2 victory. The result marked one of the tournament’s most dramatic knockout matches and ended Senegal’s hopes of progressing further.
The defeat prompted widespread disappointment among supporters and intensified scrutiny of the team’s performances throughout the tournament.
Pressure Mounted After Tournament Exit
In the days following the World Cup elimination, criticism of the coaching staff grew among sections of the football community.
Supporters questioned the team’s tactical approach, substitution decisions, and squad selection during the tournament. An online petition calling for changes to the national team’s coaching setup reportedly attracted thousands of signatures, reflecting growing frustration over the team’s early exit.
Football analysts also debated whether Senegal’s experienced core should remain central to the squad as the country prepares for future international competitions.
Reports of Dressing Room Tensions
The World Cup exit was also followed by reports of tensions within the national team.
Midfielder Pape Gueye publicly indicated that he would step away from international football while Pape Thiaw remained in charge, highlighting growing concerns over the relationship between some players and the coaching staff.
Although the federation has not publicly commented on internal disagreements, the reported tensions added to mounting pressure for change.
Federation Opts for Fresh Start
In a statement following its executive meeting, the FSF confirmed that it had initiated the process of terminating the contracts of Thiaw and his technical team, describing the decision as being made in the best interests of Senegalese football.
The move leaves the national team’s coaching position vacant as the federation begins the search for a new head coach to lead the Lions of Teranga into the next international cycle.
The incoming coach will be tasked with rebuilding the squad, integrating emerging talent, and preparing Senegal for upcoming continental and international competitions, including qualification campaigns for future major tournaments.
Despite the disappointing end to his tenure, Thiaw departs after guiding Senegal through an important period in the national team’s development. The federation is expected to announce plans for the appointment of a new coaching staff in the coming weeks.
