The Ghana Armed Forces Athletics Team delivered an impressive performance at the 2026 1st National Open Athletics Championship, winning a total of 23 medals at the competition held on March 14, 2026. The championship took place at the Cape Coast Sports Stadium and attracted athletes from across the country.

The military team dominated several track and field events, securing a strong medal haul that included 10 gold medals, 7 silver medals, and 6 bronze medals. Their performance placed them among the standout teams at the national competition and demonstrated the growing strength of athletics within the Ghana Armed Forces.

One of the most notable achievements of the event came from Mamoud Baba Seidu, a private in the Ghana Armed Forces, who set a new national record in the 400-meter hurdles. He completed the race in 49.45 seconds, marking a significant milestone for Ghanaian athletics and highlighting his rising potential on the national stage.

The championship also served as an important selection platform for the country’s national athletics squad. Following the competition, seven athletes from the Ghana Armed Forces team earned qualification to join the national team, reinforcing the military’s role as a key contributor to Ghana’s athletics development.

Athletes from the Ghana Armed Forces competed against representatives from several other security agencies, including the Ghana Immigration Service, Ghana National Fire Service, and the Ghana Prisons Service. The competition also featured participants from tertiary institutions and second-cycle schools across the country.

The 2026 National Open Athletics Championship marked the official start of Ghana’s athletics season for the year. Organizers used the event not only to crown national champions but also to identify emerging talent who could represent Ghana in upcoming international competitions, including the World Athletics U20 Championships.

With their strong showing at the championship, the Ghana Armed Forces athletics team has once again demonstrated its ability to produce high-performing athletes capable of competing at both national and international levels.
