Squad selections for the Ghana football team ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup

Debate continues to grow around squad selections for the Ghana national football team as the team prepares for international friendlies ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The discussion intensified after Ghanaian coach and sports analyst Christopher Nimley publicly questioned some of the decisions made by Black Stars head coach Otto Addo.

The controversy centers on the continued exclusion of veteran captain André Ayew, popularly known as “Dede” Ayew, from the national team squad. Addo recently announced a 26-man squad for upcoming high-profile international friendlies against Austria and Germany, once again leaving Ayew out of the lineup.

Explaining his decision, Addo indicated that he currently sees other players ahead of the experienced forward in the squad hierarchy. The decision has sparked widespread discussion among fans and pundits about the balance between experience and youth within the team.

Christopher Nimley, who has previously argued that Ayew should not automatically be guaranteed a place in the squad in order to create opportunities for younger players, has recently expressed concern about the quality and cohesion of the current selections. Nimley warned that the team risks becoming a “time bomb” if a clear technical identity and consistent evaluation of players are not maintained.

Part of Nimley’s criticism focused on the inclusion of relatively less experienced players such as Daniel Adjei and others, whom he believes have not yet demonstrated enough at the international level. He suggested that overlooking experienced leaders like Ayew—who has recently been in good form at NAC Breda—could affect leadership and stability within the squad.

The March friendlies are expected to serve as an important testing ground for the Black Stars as the team prepares for the upcoming World Cup tournament scheduled for June 2026.

During the group stage of the tournament, Ghana will face a challenging lineup of opponents. The team is set to open its campaign against Panama on June 17, 2026, at BMO Field. Ghana will then play England on June 23 at Gillette Stadium before concluding the group stage against Croatia on June 27 at Lincoln Financial Field.

Despite reports suggesting that some government officials have encouraged the Ghana Football Association to consider recalling Ayew because of his leadership experience, Otto Addo has maintained that all squad decisions are guided by his long-term technical vision for the national team.

With the World Cup approaching, discussions about squad selection, team chemistry, and leadership are likely to remain central to conversations surrounding Ghana’s preparations for the global tournament.
